The original story

The epic of Gilgamesh is one of the oldest recorded stories in history. With a title like that, I just had to read it? So, how does it hold up Well, I'd say it's roughly comparable to the Greek mythology I've read before.
The tome has two major characters. The first is Gilgamesh, ancient king of Babylon, a fearsome warrior, and jerk to his subjects. The second is Enkidu. A wild man created by by the gods to put a stop Gilgamesh. Along with the few minor characters, they go on adventures and explore themes of love, courage, and the nature of life and death.
On it's own, I would consider this book comparable to some Greek myths, like the Odyssey, that I've read. However,the problem is the loss of large chunks of the story to time. Over the years, before the story was compiled, chunks of the stone tablets it was written on were destroyed. It's just frustrating to see entire passages missing, along with the occasional sentence fragment in a story like this. So, the book is decent, but feels very incomplete.

Gilgamesh - Surprisingly Human

This book is an original translation (at times, a medley from Sumerian, Babylonian and Assyrian tablets) and is probably best enjoyed by someone who is sincerely interested in the subject, in the language, in the story of the heroes - perhaps someone who is given to academic or scholarly endeavors or simply a reader with a sincere passion for the topic or the times, such as myself.
Should you be interested in the mere story-line, or possess a general curiosity on the topic, well, this is probably not the book for you, given that the language might seem too elevated (boring to some) too technical, etc. Fortunately, there are other retold versions in print, hence, there is a version for everyone's taste and level of interest.
For those who are interested in this particular original text, and a true, deep understanding of it, perhaps some contextual preparation may be a worthwhile effort, reason being that reference is made to "things" (don't wish to give the story away) and gods which may be confusing, or perhaps not understood and glanced over, thereby diminishing a thorough understanding or enjoyment of the text. A simple search on the internet may prove itself quite illuminating.
For a deeper look, a most readable book that comes to mind, which would be thoroughly enjoyed by the reader is called "The Twelfth Planet" by Zecharia Sitchin Twelfth Planet: Book I of the Earth Chronicles (The Earth Chronicles). One does not have to subscribe to Mr. Sitchin's ideas or point of view, and yet, learn from the numerous references and deep analyses of Gilgamesh and his times (and so much, much more).
With such a base, the reading of The Epic of Gilgamesh becomes a real joy, and subsequently reading Gilgamesh, one experiences instant recognition of terms, names, places, etc. which only add to the pleasure of reading this poem not to mention the ability of placing the hero into the context of a civilization with which, by now, the reader is quite familiar. Now, one can easily have a discussion on the topic, because of one's thorough understanding of the times, their gods and the general context.
With this deeper understanding, one can now focus on the main hero, his complexity, his humanity, as well as that of the other characters in the poem. They will surprise and touch the reader by the way they demonstrate their affections, their morality, their ultimate pursuit. With the same deeper understanding, one can now afford to get emotionally involved with the characters and the beauty of the poem, rather than be stuck on understanding a concept, a place or a god.
A note about the publisher. The binding of the book is lovely, beautiful quality of the cover, pages, print, etc. A book one touches with clean hands (if there are still those readers out there). A definite keeper (or a fine present).

Writing this was. I don't care for it. Would not recommend it to anyone. Hope I find something I do like and is more to my liking
