Excellent Introduction to Espiritisma

Most who practice an orthodox brand of Ifa and Santeria, will not appreciate this work.
For those that are comfortable blending disciplines as diverse as Mexican Santeria, Ifa, Roman Catholicism, and Western mysticism, this book will be invaluable.
This book is a practitioner's guide to ritual, and does not attempt to provide a philosophy or apologetics. It is a clear concise guide to Espiritisma as I learned it as a child. While I have a more formal background in Santeria, this book is really a guide to how most Latino and Chicanos practice Santeria -- rather than an ethnographic representation of Orthodox -- and sometimes sexist, and biogtted "classic" Santeria.
This book is extremly well written, and compact. It is a simple guide to get one started. It will be of great value to Wiccans, practioners of Mexican Espiritisma, and North American Espiristisma within Latino cultures. In short it accessable to to whites, black, latinos, and native-americans who wish to practice creative ritual and meditation within a group or independently.
If you seek a less individual approach, and believe that only a certain color can assist you, than this book is not for you. It emphasizes individuality, creativity, and flexibility.
I am re-ordering this book, as I have given so many copies away. I find that college educated and "open-minded" people find this book to be a God-send. If you seek a fundamentalistic and orthodox approach to Santeria, this book is not for you.
In many ways, this book is a "leveler." It does not advocate a need for expensive initiations costing thousands of dollars, or a single "Priest" to tell one how to live to the letter of the law.
Basically, El Obatala tries to get one started with the basics immeditately. He shows the reader how to honor the ancestors, Santos and set up an altar. He demonstrates effective rituals.
This is a wonderful book. Books like this will receive "poor reviews" by those who wish the basics to be kept a secret. Fortunately, the author writes at a "higher level of understanding," knowing that Santeria is about relationship, loving-kindness and Light, as opposed to orthodoxy.
This brand of Santeria is familiar to Latino and other cultures who have learned these teachings as a child in neighborhood botonicas and from relatives. It will be of great value to Christians who wish to combine these elements of expression in ritual.
This little guide is a masterpiece, obviously dedicated to Obatala (sometimes known as the Virgen Mercedes), the Santo of purity, pure energy and Light. Obatala is a kind of judge who cleanses us of injustice and bogotry. This book is a great homage to Mercedes in opening the door to so many.
The advanced pratitioner will find this work invaluable as a concise guide, inviting individual creativity and a blending of various cultural mores.
As a High Priest in Mexican Santeria, and as a trained cultural anthropogist, I highly recommend this book.

Not impressed.........

I thumbed through this booklet, and to be honest was not impressed. This book was to much like one of those Wiccan Book of Shadows that are sold in book stores for a dime a dozen. And like those books, you pay for a bunch of nothing. Creative Ritual, shows how to cast a circle. "????????" How to build a Spirit Altar, which was seamed like a First grade project, and dabbles a bit on Obi divination, but instead of using the Coconut, he advices cowrie shells or coins.
One review wrote how this is a good introduction to Espiritismo. This is far from el Espiritismo as practiced by my grandparents. I am sorry this book would have been good, if it taught something or had something to say. Which quite honestly it does not. But what can you expect for 4 bucks.. If you are looking for a good book on this sort of subject, check out the Voodoo Grimoire, by El Negro Jose

Better Left Alone

I understand what the author was trying to do... Help those who are in the Wiccan tradition understand and convert some of their practices. But, this book does a very poor job in doing so. Anyone interested in combining the practices of Santeria, Wiccan or any of the African traditions. Would be best to study New Orleans Voodoo and it would help them to read Luisah Teish's Jambalaya. You would be better off to skip this book. Only qualified individuals should attempt to do what this author is suggesting. Then again, some things are better left alone.
Unfortunately, this is one of the reason why it is hard to go deeper into these traditions because of people trying combine, mix, convert or whatever. Please skip, if you know what's good for you.
