My new portable addiction!
By Marco Velasquez
I was not fortunate enough to have backed the kickstarter for this project. However, I was fortunate enough to discover this amazing Solitaire dungeon delver through Matthew Lowes website! This game has brought me countless hours of amusement, adventure, and swearing at cards. The game uses either a standard deck of playing cards (basic rules), a tarot deck (expert rules), or the beautifully illustrated tarot deck with art by Josephe Vandel (advanced rules with exclusive extra tarot); I recommend you purchase the special deck so you can play through the amazing additional scenarios offered in the expert rules. The deck represents a mysterious dungeon which reveals itself to your hero with each flipped card presenting itself as a new room filled with monsters, locked doors, or trapped treasures.

The gameplay is largely based on chance and because of that every play through is as unique as the game itself. At times, it can be a little frustrating to be killed by a random card after coming so close to victory, but this doesn't discourage play, it entices you to play again and again until you've beaten your best score and claimed all the treasures this dungeon has to offer. Another one of the amazing aspects of this game is that it really lends itself to narrative play and you can easily come up with new game scenarios to enjoy! If you're looking for a portable, addicting, and challenging experience, Labyrinth of Souls is all that and more.

If you're still aren't convinced that this game is right for you, then I highly recommend you go to Matthew Lowes website and check out its free to play predecessor Dungeon Solitaire: Tomb of the Four Kings or the 32 page sample for this game. A great deal of time and creativity has gone into this game, the result is endless fun you can enjoy anytime!

Dungeon Solitaire - Labyrinth of Souls
By David Reid
As an initial Kickstarter backer of the Dungeon Solitaire: Labyrinth of Souls campaign, I received a digital copy of this fantastic tome of gaming bliss for my rewards package. As this book became printed and displayed in pictures and videos by the author on the Internet soon after the successful close of the campaign, I realized I should have opted in for the physical copy as well. I plan to order a printed copy of the book soon as it's very well created, as well as aptly deserving to exist in material form to compliment this marvelous game.

The original Dungeon Solitaire: Tomb of the Four Kings hit the Internet running last year with an immensely positive buzz circulating through the gaming community on several popular sites. As popularity rapidly caught on with that freely available download, the author decided to expand the original version from a standard deck of playing cards to an extended format utilizing a Tarot deck for added flexibility and complexity. A Kickstarter campaign ensued that successfully produced a beautifully suitable custom Tarot deck with amazing artwork from artist Josephe Vandel, along with this thorough manual that explains every detail clearly with lovely illustrations.

What has been lacking in most card games in the fantasy tabletop realm is the fact that single player games are in very short supply. Whereas the core game play of this product certainly does resemble solitaire, its roots lie much deeper in a roleplaying vibe where strategic elements and symbolism trigger the imagination that delights with addictive rounds of challenging scenarios. Fans of AD&D, Magic: The Gathering and roleplaying systems of old will feel right at home with Labyrinth of Souls, taking minimal time to get acquainted with the rules and start playing immediately. The only game for Tarot that I'm aware of is Tarocchi, which is a trick-taking game involving multiple players attempting to trump each other's cards, and it's a shame we have waited this long for something so ingenious to come along utilizing Tarot until now, but the wait is finally over!

Labyrinth of Souls offers a generous array of three core game versions with an additional six variations, totalling nine different ways to play right out of the book. These modes include Basic, Expert, and Advanced Rules, as well as Two-Player Cooperative, Dragon's Lair, Undead Hordes, Mega-Dungeon, Campaign Mode, and Cartomancy. Basic manifests as the original Tomb of the Four Kings game that is playable with a standard deck of playing cards; the other eight modes require a Tarot deck of at least 78 cards. As there are 88 available cards in the custom Labyrinth of Souls deck, it has been thoughtfully designed to allow a Tarot deck of 78 cards with a simple substitution for the hit point counter cards to be able to play all variations. Although, I cannot stress enough that the Labyrinth of Souls deck is fantastic for this game and really should be obtained for maximum effect. This custom deck will be available in a few days at The Game Crafter for a very reasonable price, and is worth every penny.

Since my review took so much space here, I am left to simply give my highest recommendation for this incredible game that has brought so much joy and pleasure in my spare time. Mathew Lowes really put an obvious amount of attention and great detail into this project to where one simply cannot put it down when you start playing. The phrase "one more round" is extremely common after each brutal demise of your character, and obtaining that better score is always on the horizon. As the game is easy to learn and difficult to win, it keeps you coming back, even playing the Basic variation, time and time again. I would easily say that Labyrinth of Souls is the best card game, especially for single players, that has come along in many decades, if not longer.
