A very enlightening book on spiritual symbolism

Dr. Obeyeseskere takes us on an exploration of the subject of what can be known or not known of the Absolute or Nirvana or God. He uses the visions of Buddha and later Buddhists, and also uses examples of Christnan mystics like St. John of the Cross and Julian of Norwich. William Blake is also prominent. Modern thinkers who realized the value of dreams, like Freud and Jung, along with mystics from Theosophy, are also part of this encyclopedic work. And don't forget Plotinus and Nagarjuna! I will have to read it again for a full absorption. Some knowledge of Eastern and Western philosophy is a good background to reading this. For those interested in spiritual practice, the book is helpful in that is liberates the modern mind from a rationalistic rejection of experiences of dreams and visions. Visions, dreams, and intimations may be the most valid phenomena of spiritual understanding we can have.
