James Harrington provides the solution―a revolutionary step-by-step method for streamlining and improving business processes that can:

  • Cut cost and cycle time by 60 percent
  • Improve customer and employee satisfaction
  • Boost quality by 100 percent
  • Analyze, streamline, and refine key processes more quickly and efficiently than ever before

Filled with checklists, questionnaires, and key process tools, this book is designed to help you streamline your systems―and to continue to improve―using a refined combination of the most effective methods available. Streamlined Process Improvement
By Laurel
In Streamlined Process Improvement (McGraw-Hill, 2011), H. James Harrington has optimized his well-known Business Process Improvement methodology so that it generates faster, major improvement in key processes of your operations. This book is about process redesign and focuses on doing the right things at the right time.

The processes that you select to improve should provide you with the best-value future-state solution, which may not be represented in today's best practices, says Harrington. New approaches, such as simulation modeling, risk analysis, 5S, and process variation have been applied to the PASIC methodology, which have realigned its sub processes with today's business world. Harrington explains how these approaches are used in the five phases of PASIC, which include:
* Planning for improvement
* Analyzing the process
* Streamlining the process
* Implementing the new process
* Continuous improvement

Each phase is described in detail and is comprised of many activities to help analyze processes and decide which one to focus on first. The tools to use in these activities are thoroughly explained and illustrated, including flowcharts, value-stream mapping, process walk-through questionnaires, statistical charts, checklists, simulation models, and more. Thorough definitions and many examples of waste, value-added activities, and best practices help you to apply streamlining approaches.

"Challenge everything," says Harrington. "There is no sacred cow in SPI [streamline process improvement]. Every activity can always be done in a better way."

Could streamlined process improvement be applied to your department? Appendix A lists several job functions and related business processes where streamlined process improvement can be applied.
Appendixes B through H include:
B. Process walk-through questionnaire
C. Process simulation tool suppliers
D. Definitions
E. Simulation symbols
F. Typical government processes
G. Nonmanufacturing typical processes measurements
H. Harmful and useful (HU) diagrams

Highly Recommend
By Mitchell W. Manning
This book is a change management bible by the world renowned guru on process improvement, H. James Harrington, Ph.D. The target audience is operations managers, quality consultants, Six Sigma practitioners, knowledge workers, and Lean thinkers. But, the potential audience is much larger. "Streamlined Process Improvement" is a need-to-read for everyone from Human Resources specialists to Product and Service Support technicians. If you are affected by, or, responsible and accountable for change management, especially cultural change, you can benefit from reading this masterful book on process management and change. The simple PASIC approach shows you how to Plan, Analyze, Streamline, Implement, and Continuously Improve any process in your organization.

Clarity and conciseness are characteristics of Dr. Harrington's writing, presenting, and teaching style. In this book he provides a history and comparison of process improvement methodologies; gives the motivation for streamlined process improvement; tells precisely how to plan, analyze, streamline, implement, and continuously improve process improvement; and fills his narrative with personal anecdotes, real business experiences, checklists, questionnaires, and key process tools in 390 pages.

There is value in reading Streamlined Process Improvement for the novice, the journeyman, the master, and the sage of process improvement. The novice will benefit from the figures, charts, and readability. The journeyman will benefit from the insights, examples, comparisons, and systematic and logical presentation. The master will benefit from the breakthrough thinking. The sage will benefit from getting inside the mind of another process improvement guru. If I could have only one book in my process improvement library, "Streamlined Process Improvement" would be the book.

Ridiculous to reissue an old book under a new title
By Aaron U. Bolin
I am embarrassed for James Harrington; he should be ashamed of himself for reissuing an old book under a new title. I think the man is brilliant, but check out his 1991 title: "Business Process Improvement: The Breakthrough Strategy for Total Quality, Productivity, and Competitiveness." It is exactly the same content -- or it is very close. Harrington does go through the trouble of re-naming the DMAIC cycle and coins some other neo-logisms in an effort to sound original. If you can't tell, I am actually a little angry. I feel cheated. So sad, because I was a big fan of H. James Harrington. Fool me once, shame on me.

On the bright side, the book is actually a pretty good introduction to continuous process improvement for novices. Experienced practitioners won't find anything new here, but newbies will find an approachable introduction to some powerful techniques.

I would have preferred an honest re-issue of the old volume, but he does provide a pretty clear outline of the process improvement methodology.
