About the Author
M.L. Rice was born and raised in the plains of Texas. She graduated with a degree in Radio/TV/Film from the University of Texas at Austin where she was a proud member of the Longhorn Marching and Basketball Bands. After college she moved to sunny Los Angeles where she currently lives with her wife and three cats. She enjoys scuba diving, hiking, kayaking, swimming, spending too much time on video games, going to the theater, and playing in Disneyland. She volunteers for various non-profit organizations, travels whenever she can, collects and plays multiple instruments including the trumpet, cello, and great highland bagpipes, and is also a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Fun, touching coming-out/coming-of-age story

Who I Am was a really good read. The first half made me laugh (I found Devin, the main character and narrator, to be surprisingly funny), and I kept wanting to read parts of it aloud to my girlfriend. The second half was more emotional and I couldn't stop reading.
It's a coming out story about the terror and exhilaration of falling in love with a friend, and about having to deal with classmates and family who are less than understanding. I wish I had had this book to read when I was in junior high or high school (in fact I'm planning to buy a copy for my younger sister).
The book is universal enough that pretty much anyone who likes young adult coming-of-age or first-love stories will enjoy reading it, and it's true enough that anyone who grew up being different (in any way, really) will recognize and empathize with Devin's situation.

A balanced and enjoyable young adult book about coming out

This is a new book in the BSB Young Adult section and seems to be a debut book by M.L. Rice. This is a enjoyable book by M.L. Rice who captures well the high-school pressure on nerds, the ups and downs of coming out, the bliss of young love along with some unexpected turns in the story. It is nice that the focus on the story is solidly on the positive side, although the scary and life-threatening possibilities of a coming out are explored in depth. I liked that there is a balance and that the message comes across that it can get better without dismissing the difficult aspects. A solid and enjoyable book.

Really good Coming out story!

I dont really read coming out stories to much but i decided to give this book a try and i was not disappointed. The characters are some that you will love your self. Usually books dont make me cry but with this one i had tears streaming down my face during a part of the book. It opens you up to the type of reactions that a lot of kids go through when coming out to their families. This book will be on my reread list and i recommend it to everyone willing to give it a try.
